day one... it's all downhill from here on in...
hello friends and family,
in about 90 minutes i will be taking off to toronto to meet up with steve and rich and then we are off to paris to see andree and begin the gong-show that is european backpacking.
apologies for the lengthy delays with blog postings...
and here we have... the travel schedule... kind of... in two parts (green is may, blue is june, yellow is july).

SO... we have the current people joining us at various points...
andree st.germain
her bro phil st.germain
kim chen
we're also probably going to meet up with jason landry's sister's family to hang out in malaga (south spain...surfing?!)
if you are interested, drop us a line and meet up. would be cool to see you guys abroad.
also, i bought a little travel journal thingybob that i will try and write in everyday and stuff, so this blog will possibly transform into more pictures (of the writing) that you guys can all read... if you can read my chicken scrawl writing.
here is a recent picture of us in vegas for michelle and rob's wedding. what a mess...
rich is going to get hurt this summer. if not by europeans that he pisses off, then by nusbaum and i. sample story...
the precursor is that the wedding party was decked out nicely in lovely dresses, and the lads wore tuxes with top hats (so money).
about midnight at the reception (text follows general conversation that actually happened):
rich, "ng! i am gonna f$&k that mike guy right up"
me, "mike? at our dinner table? dude, he is the nicest guy ever"
rich, "i don't f%*king care. i'm gonna stab him"
me, "ok, why?"
rich (pointing to his head), "do you see the top hat i was wearing?"
me, "well, no. i saw you wearing it a while ago, we all wore a top hat at some point"
rich, "that f#$ker stole it from me!"
me, "um. it was his though."
rich, "what are you f*@king talking about?"
me, "is was his. he rented it, he has to return it and make sure it doesn't get lost or damaged. trust me. it's his. he was in the wedding party... remember?"
rich, "... NOBODY is going to make as much money as ME!"
end scene. yes ladies and gents. this summer is going to hurt. everyone. in europe.
(the last line totally did not come into the conversation, but it's something rich would say, and has in the past)
and for this postings installment of things said by one of us three:
nusbaum, "i would let a monkey blow me"
context: none. out of the blue.
stay tuned folks.

iPhone blogging?!
Hello again. Sorry about the lengthy delays on posts. School got in the way and then so did laziness and procrastination but now... Look out world!
Just kidding. I will likely fall lazy again. But for now I am testing the blogging abilities via the phone. I guess I can't do links and stuff. Pics? I don't think so

initial scheduling, u2, gps
we have determined a preliminary travel schedule for the time period up until rich leaves to head back to toronto for work. steve and i were talking about how this will be a sad day and that we'll have to take rich out for one last night of mayhem as a send-off. in fact, it may be so epic that rich will miss his flight and just decide to hangout until the rest of us have to leave.
HOWEVER - a wrench has been thrown into the plan (albeit a good wrench) with the announcement of u2's world tour that will start in barcelona on june 30th.
as such, we will be rejigging our schedule to try and hit that up and so i am not bothering with posting our travel plans for now (as long as we can get tickets... i hate scalpers and historically they have snapped up a lot of the tickets not taken by fanclub members). speaking of fanclub members, anyone out there that would be able to score us 4 tickets for the barcelona opener?
paris on july 11 also sounds good... maybe two shows?
JUST IN NOW: kim chen wants in for barcelona show. guess that means that if we get tickets, she now knows what timeframe she'll be with us in europe...
COME ON! (feature title... we'll see how long this lasts...)
for this post, i am also starting a feature where i list all of the things said by rich, steve and myself that, when taken out of context (like here) seem like rather inappropriate things to say. for that matter, even in context they could be entirely inappropriate:
1. nusbaum: "i bite"
2. pak: "rail it for the backend"
context? ok, for nusbaum's comment, it was something along the lines of us picking on him over an email discussion for a case we are working on, and him effectively telling us to back off because he bites... see? even in context it sounds inappropriate.
for pak's, we were talking about euro-rail and cheap flights and other travel options for getting around europe and we were talking about perhaps using the eurorail system for the latter half of his trip. but still... come on! poor choice of words.
and yes, i have said nothing appropriate since the last post.
now for the tech geeks reading, there is FINALLY an iphone app that will enable your iphone to function as a REAL GPS device. currently only maps for the US are available but by the end of this quarter, canada and europe should be available for downloading. just in time... as some of my friends back in vancouver know, i am notorious for being geographically inept and not being able to make my way around without someone explicitly telling me where to go. in fact, a few years ago driving across north america with my buddy chad, he claims he had to sleep with one eye open while i was driving to ensure that i didn't get us lost... i think he exagerrates. although he has a slight point there. btw, side note, he runs ultra-marathons (100 mile races... straight. so it takes like 24 hours or so sometimes more). he is crazy like that.
thanks also to those that took part in the poll i tried out last time. apparently people get the impression that we will be at each other's throats pretty soon.
... ok, i just realised that could be taken out of context too.

uh oh. i think i might start getting a tad addicted to this thing. although, for all my friends in vancouver, you know how my illustrious running career faired as i blogged about that experience as well (you'll have to navigate your way to the blog bit of that site... this was a while ago).
my buddy maureen posted a comment on my facebook page when i basically told people that the trip was definitely a go...
... i didn't clue into what she meant until i was back in vancouver talking to some buddies about their europe trip, and they said "whatever you pack clothes wise, cut it in half, and bring twice as much money. you never need as much as you pack, and you never have enough money". then the lightbulb went on, and i realised what maureen was on about. she also tried to re-explain it to me in haiku form. she rocks. i was a little slow over reading week...
anyways, i started doing a bit of research into some logistics and was originally thinking eurorail would be the best bet, but then found out (after rich had told me about his sisters travels) that ryanair has some ridonk cheap fares all over europe. as a result, we're probably gonna sit down and maybe figure out some scheduling so we can book a few flights in advance and take advantage of the fares (or lack thereof).

my parents also told me about a tonne of cool stuff they did in europe back in the day when they lived in england, so i'll probably try to check out some of those sights. in particular they mentioned florence and some place in switzerland called lucerne. that actually fits quite nicely with an idea that my brother dave had and also what andree expressed in... a camping trip in the swiss alps... hells yeah.
the jungfrau region in switzerland... i am way too excited for this. ahhh mountains...

meet the main travelling circus for this summer's european extravaganza (from left to right) steve nusbaum, me (steve ng) and rich pak.
we are currently in "planning" mode for the trip, and i use quotation marks because the first time we tried to meet, we just got drunk instead. is this a sign of things to come? no. and when i say "no", i mean maybe. and when i say "maybe", i mean very likely.
we have thus far booked our flights into europe (via paris to meet up with the very lovely andree st.germain who will join us for a few weekends of travel) and nusbaum was the first to fall prey to the craftiness inherent in all of rich's and my bretheren - nusbaum (the biggest guy out of all of us... although not the biggest steve in the program... another story for a later time) is sitting bitch for the flight to paris.
i am currently trying to recruit peeps to join up with us on our travels and so far, i believe i have gotten the ear of good friends of mine, jason landry, kim chen (not a picture of her, but she can do this kind of thing. it's awesome), rob (and mina) kim, and perhaps ashtar zubair.
current places to hit up: lisbon, barcelona, paris, amsterdam, istanbul, athens, venice, rome, zurich, london, dublin, berlin, vienna, prague, kiev, nice, monaco (start of the tour de france)
new ones since initial brainstorm: cinque terra, florence, pompeii, normandy, salzburg, somewhere in the alps to camp and hike as well
ones i might drop: istanbul, lisbon, kiev
i will be gallivanting from may 20 to july 23, and a warm-up will occur in las vegas on the may 15-17 weekend. come on out and join in the fun. derek bideshi will be there on a stag, but i'm sure we'll whoop it up vancouver style.
