day 21 barcelona-naples

10 june 2009

very early start to the day so that we would make it to the airport on time for 10:40a flights to south korea for pak and naples for nusbaum and i. on the trip in, we consumed a lot of carrots... and at el prat (BCN), we ate even more, with yoghurt, OJ etc.

arriving in naples, we picked up the rental car - fiat panda! wow. is that a small car! however, as we soon saw, that was a saving grace when it came to navigating napoli streets. some roads are narrow as hell, especially with parked cars, scooters do not obey traffic signals, and there appears to be very little understanding of the concept of lanes. in addition, nusbaum decided to roll the dice with pedestrian etiquette and we learned that you will never cross a street on foot unless you just start walking. scary. i led the way at night, and my heart was racing. anyhows, back to the afternoon, we had trouble starting the panda after stalling (manual, nusbaum drove), but we think we have the immobilize figured out. we were also warned repeatedly about theft (of cars) in our hostel area, so we parked in a secure garage just to be safe.

hostel itself looks fun, although in a dodgy looking building with a 5c pay elevator at certain times!

went walking around checking out castel nuovo for 5e which blew goats. then we saw the free castel dell'ovo which was wicked (great panoramic views of naples from the top) and saw piazoo plebisicito which is huge. also tried the palazzo real, but it was closed... which explains why we could enter grounds for free.

had 2 servings of limone gelato (one in afternoon, one after dinner) and ate parts of a "small child" and other pizza goodness in recommended di matteo pizzeria
