day 23 naples - sorrento

12 june 2009

was still amazed at the 5kg tub of nutella this morning (editor 2010: whoops - looks like i posted that pic on the wrong day). nusbaum and i went to get the car, but detoured to find our toothpick holder and postcard (for emily - editor 2010: my sister). took us a while, and we ended up getting it very near the hostel, after having walked a crapload.

christine's laundry was still wet , so on the drive to sorrento, she let the passing air dry it (followed by leaving it in over car once we arrive at 7 hostel).

i learned today that if i bring up directions on iphone maps, it actually downloads the whole route so i can use it with no wifi! GPS worked awesome and radio in panda did not (couldn't get steve's radio-ipod thing to kick in)

found the hostel with basically no happenings (except nusbaum decided to join in the seemingly useless car honking in naples)

the 7 hostel is ridiculously nice (27e) and we decided to take a quick tour onto the rooftop patio because we got there before check-in time. went to supermarket nearby and had lunch on the roof.
- i don't like arugula
- mustard is relatively hard to come by in sorrento
- nusbaum argued that happy and joyful are entirely different as per conversation around catherine's chip bag that said "splendido gadget" and came with a yo-yo. he said "splendido" might not translate to "splendid" which is fair, but also said that something like "cool" or "amazing" was not the same as splendid... (not 3 hrs, 2:50... i wish pak were here :). catherine cried laughing
- nusbaum and i busted out the stupid bets and dares

in sorrento to catch ferry to capri, nice guy at parking garage told us that it would be better to leave tomorrow AM for capri, as the total cost would be a lot. so we went on random drive instead and ended up hiking to some old roman ruins on a point (with budget lighthouse).

than we tried to look for the small beach near the hostel but it appeared to be crap, small, privately owned (by restaurant?) and inaccessible. so we ditched and went back to hostel. at this point, there were a tonne of american young people there all getting tarted up and it felt like i had entered a reality TV show. after a looooovely shower, went to research sorrento - rome journey and was going to book, but then talked to some people who said don't bother and just go. so i'll do that.

took the panda to supermarket so christine and i could get wine for all of us, and then we all went for dinner and talked about stupid celebrities (nusbaum hates paris hilton), algerian men, bull(s)fighting... not two bulls, and re-hashed encounter with two sheltered, righteous and ditzy american girls in our dorm (who get into a car with random italians? and then continues to talk to random men despite being creeped out? "you have no idea who we are...")

came back and played cards, i got screwed because they all ganged up on me and i had to pick one of the oranges off the indoor tree/plant and eat it. sour as hell. yech.
