day 28 rome - florence

17 june 2009

when we had our stuff all ready downstairs and waiting for steve, crazy guy was back again yelling randomly. said goodbye to james, and then nusbaum came with the brand new fiat punto! it took us a while to get out of rome, (~1hr) as the signage (as always in italy) was crap. pak did a good job navigating overall and then construction in florence screwed us with the final approach. oh well.

learned that in florence, the building numbering system has blue and red numbers. blue is residential and red is business, and it really messes things up.

the "central hostel" is manned by mario who is really nice, but the hostel itself kind of blows. no AC, mosquitoes and crappy computer. after quickly dropping stuff off, we went straight towards galleria dell'accademia which has a rather unimpressive entrance, but houses the extremely impressive statue of david (of goliath fame) by michaelangelo. it was stunning. the level of detail is mind-blowing with skin impression and dimples and the veins in his right arm that i attempted to compare and contrast with my own! the museum guards were absolute photo-nazis which was amusing as i watched people trying to stealthily take pics, usually getting caught in the process. apart from david though, the museum sucked. hard.

managed to meet up with christine and kevin and went to their "plus" florence hostel to for a swim, steam room and sauna!

hit up an amazing dinner at a place on via faenza just past nationale on the left with a wood fired oven, where we were extremely loud, and there was a king seat that nusbaum took. had requisite limone gelato afterwards. everyone came back to our hostel to drink more and then i went to bed.

other:
- nusbaum throws a map at a pigeon
- apparently there are a few pics of me sleeping in the car :)
