up at 7:30a to catch a local train from sant' agnello to naples centrale (garibaldi) and then naples to roma termini. the latter trip was only 38e for 2nd class and it was fine. not too sure about decision to get eurorail pass now... oh well. upon arrival at termini, was going to coincide with andree's arrival time so i told her i would meet her at via marsala exit, with an actual intention to surprise her where her airport shuttle would drop her off. followed the plane symbol but got confused, so went to via marsala exit... however, i was at a side exit while she was at the main one. eventually met at the hotel instead. nice to see her again. two weeks apart! glad i'll see her again after this in 4 days in venice!

went to grab some food after checking out piazza repubblica (andree learned the italian way of crossing streets) and then down to colanna traiana and vittoria emmanuelle II monument (tomb of the unknown soldier). that thing is huge and had a cool museum inside chronicalling italian warfare. then the colosseum which is soooo cool. 55,000 people structure, used to have water events before introducing underground structure for bringing animals and humans up to the arena (which coincidentally is named after the word "sand" which was on the ground).
crazy stories about human's getting ripped apart by animals etc.etc. and i also learned that people pillaged the ruins for building materials. saw a bit of the forum and then was about to die in the heat so we went back to our hotel and napped til 10pm when nusbaum got in (panda had a flat and navigation was a pain in rome apparently).
this city also has a lack of clear street signs which sucked, but we managed, andree is a wiz with a map.
